We took two cars over to Buttermere, leaving one at the Honister Slate Quarry ready for our return, and the other we parked at Gatesgarth. We set off in light rain across the head of Buttermere Lake, before turning left for the climb up to Scarth Gap. From here the climb to the top of Haystacks began, getting steeper all the time and with some scrambling involved. After lunch at the top we headed down towards Honister.
